Gastroenterology is a wide and specialized field of medicine concerned with the digestive system. More specifically, gastroenterology involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary system. Some of the more common problems include peptic ulcer disease, heartburn and reflux, colon cancer/polyps, gallstones and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. A complete gastrointestinal evaluation usually includes specialized studies and procedures in addition to a thorough interview and physical examination.
